Bule Hora University, established in 2011/2012 as a public university, is one of Ethiopia’s third-generation universities. As a comprehensive institution, it focuses on teaching, research, and community engagement. Located in the southern part of Ethiopia, in the West Guji Zone of the Oromia Regional State, the university is situated in Bule Hora town, approximately 470 km south of Addis Ababa.

Since its inaugural intake of 243 students in 2011/2012, Bule Hora University has grown rapidly. Today, the university employs 4,101 staff members, including 1,219 academic staff, 2,601 administrative and supportive workers, 214 health professionals, and 67 teachers from the university’s community school. The university offers 84 undergraduate programs, 75 master’s programs, and 19 Ph.D. programs, serving a student population of over 15,000: 14,149 undergraduates, 138 post-basic students, 1,449 master’s students, and 156 Ph.D. students. This rapid expansion has also strengthened faculty and staff capacities across its two campuses.

Since its establishment, Bule Hora University has graduated more than 19,194 students. The university has introduced various reforms to adapt to the fast-changing educational landscape and to meet both national and international standards. It now comprises seven colleges, three institutes, and one School of Law at the main campus, while one college operates at the second campus in Adola Wayu, approximately 258 km east of the main campus, providing teaching, research, and community services.

In 2019, Bule Hora University inaugurated the Institute of Gada and Culture Studies, a pioneering addition to its academic programs. This institute is the first of its kind in Ethiopian higher education, focusing on indigenous knowledge systems. It promotes the culture, norms, and customs of the Oromo society, particularly the Gada system. The institute offers programs from undergraduate to Ph.D. levels and aims to equip graduates with skills to address socio-political challenges, especially in peace, security, and conflict resolution, thereby contributing to peace-building efforts and the development of educators in this critical field.

Like other higher education institutions, Bule Hora University strives for excellence in areas such as agriculture, mining, indigenous knowledge, and health. The university is committed to delivering high-quality education, conducting community-based research, and providing relevant community services. In addition, it contributes to national development efforts by promoting educational quality, administrative efficiency, good governance, and the integration of cultural and natural resource development with modern technology and its applications.
