Bule Hora University (BHU) reached a significant milestone in its internationalization journey by successfully conducting its first Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program on October 21, 2026. The landmark initiative was carried out in partnership with Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Philippines, and facilitated by the Research, International Relations and Partnership Directorate.

The virtual program brought together a vibrant community of learners and educators across borders, featuring:

  • Bule Hora University: 26 third-year Public Health students, accompanied by Mrs. Kalkidan Bejitual (Academic Affairs Internationalization and Partnership Coordinator) and Mr. Muhammed Jemal (Department of Public Health, Institute of Health; holding an MPH specializing in Public Health Nutrition).
  • Mariano Marcos State University: 44 students, accompanied by academic representatives Assistant Professor Zhiela Marie Esteban-Abiva and Dr. Jonathan M.

Bridging Cultures Through Public Health

The core academic session centered on the compelling theme: “Food Choices and Dietary Practices in Ethiopia and the Philippines.”

  • Mr. Muhammed Jemal delivered an insightful presentation representing the Ethiopian perspective.
  • Dr. Jonathan M. shared the Philippine perspective, highlighting cultural nuances and dietary traditions.

The interactive session provided students from both institutions with a unique platform to exchange knowledge, compare cultural dietary habits, and gain a deeper, cross-cultural understanding of critical public health issues in different national contexts.

Embracing Innovation in Global Education

The COIL initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to modern international education by embedding seamless online collaboration into the curriculum. By connecting international peers without the barrier of physical mobility, the program actively fosters:

  • Intercultural competence and global awareness
  • Accessible, experiential, and active learning
  • Sustainable international academic partnerships

Looking ahead

The successful execution of this inaugural COIL program underscores Bule Hora University’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and global engagement. Building on this momentum, the university plans to expand collaborative teaching and learning activities—creating even more opportunities for students and faculty to share expertise, strengthen cross-cultural ties, and forge lasting international relationships.
