Department of Mining Engineering
Background Information:
The department of Mining Engineering is established in 2018-2019 Academic Year under the College of Engineering and Technology, Bule Hora University, with the objective of responding to the need for rapid industrialization and the changing societal needs of the country for sustainable development.
-
The department believes in cultivating the full potential of students, and the advancement of all forms of knowledge keeping in pace with international standards of academic quality, including the high skilled employment needs presented by a growing economy operating in global environment.
-
The graduate engineers are highly equipped with knowledge, skill and abilities in mining engineering design, surface and underground working of mineral deposits, mine management, drilling and blasting technology, as well as effective safety, health and environmental management techniques in mining operations.
About Mining Engineering is the field of study that offers an engineering program containing aspects of mineral science, engineering, and technology that is a profession related with the minerals industry. Furthermore, it will develop a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology, including general science, geology, surveying, electrical, civil, mechanical engineering, computing and environmental science. That will pay particular attention to those aspects concerned with conservation of the mineral, environment, health & safety, ventilation, pollution and management of people & resources. Ethiopia has been a producer of gold, iron, coal, lead, zinc, copper and industrial minerals such as dimensional stones, brick-clay,
diatomite, and feldspar, gemstone, granite, gypsum, dehydrate, kaolin, limestone, pumice, salt, sand. The country also produced cements, lime, lignite, and steel.
In Ethiopia Mining Engineering course is having more demand because: Mining engineering offers only three universities AASTU, Axum University and Bule Hora University

Objectives
Under Graduate students in mining engineering have several potential areas to engage on. There are various governmental, non-governmental and private institutions and companies with ever increasing demand in the mining and processing sector. Among the potential areas by which graduates of the department that can be involved includes the following: Graduates will be able
-
To apply their knowledge to promote the mining industry and proper exploitation and utilization of the mineral resources of the country.
-
To participate in metallic minerals extracting and processing companies.
-
To participate in industrial minerals and rocks quarrying and processing companies.
-
To work in reserve estimation and decision making.
-
To work in machineries and material selection for the industrial processes.
-
To implement their knowledge acquired & through field work in the mining sites where extractions are carried out.
-
To contribute their part to the task of the mining industries and management. To work in designing either surface or underground mines.
Goals
-
To train students to acquire knowledge in the areas of mining engineering processes, systems, and technologies.
-
To develop curriculum and instructional programs in mining engineering in tune with need of the time.
-
To generate new knowledge through research and development and to disseminate it.
-
To modernize laboratories and to establish research facilities in the emerging areas.
-
To promote faculty and staff development for updating and acquiring new knowledge and improving professional competence.
-
To provide technical services to the mining industry.
-
To provide guidance and counselling to students and to establish fruitful linkage with alumni.
Vision
To create an environment conducive for attaining professional competence in the field of Mining Engineering and to provide specialized training for developing need-based human resource, while fostering within students and staff committed to academic, social, and professional development. Within a few years the department becomes institute, and we give a special and knowledge-based support for the local and grand project companies in Oromia region, and this has direct contribution to our country Ethiopia. Within 10 years we try to put Bule Hora University, Institute of Mines, under the first 10 institute in Africa.
Mission
To maintain the standard of mining education and commitment for basic research and applied research in the diverse fields of mining, excavation engineering and other interdisciplinary areas and continuously starving to be recognized internationally for education, research, and service to the mining and allied industry. In around Guji zone, Oromia regional state there is plenty of minerals as well as there are a number of artisanal miners who works in local trend without any personal protecting equipment’s, so our department supports these local or artisanal miners by giving continuous awareness training and some modified simple machines in order to increase the recovery rate.
Admission Criteria
Applicants to the program must successfully complete the pre-college program set by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; and Fulfillment of the general University-level admission requirements.
Duration of Study
The program will have five academic years and ten semesters.
Graduation Requirements
A student must have passed all prescribed courses (see Table below) earning a minimum total 197 credits which cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.00. Cumulative GPA in Major courses must be greater than or equal to 2.00 and no ‘F’ in an of the prescribed.
