SCHOOL OF LAW PROFILE

The present School of Law of Bule Hora University was founded in 2014 G.C. as a Law Department under the then Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (now college of social sciences and humanities).  In 2017E.C, the school (formerly the department) attained its current status – the school.  As of now, the school has 21 full teaching staff and five high profile adjunct staff.  Since its establishment, the school has been working strongly to offer quality education for its students, and its staff members also have been engaging in research activities. The school has also been providing free legal aid service for many members of the surrounding community who are economically unable to hire their own private lawyer. The school runs five legal ad centers in five different woredas of West Guji Zone. The The school is working with the vision of becoming one of the strong schools of Law in East Africa by 2040 in providing quality legal education and in conducting problem solving research that contributes to the improvement of the life of the community.  Besides, the school is on the process of launching ‘Human rights and peace studies’ research center with the aim of corroborating human rights education through disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, and enhance how the state and indigenous institutions and manners could contribute to the advancement of universal human rights and positive peace.
The school is also an active member of the Consortium of Ethiopian Law schools since 2015. Through its duly authorized staff, the school is contributing its fair share for the strength of the consortium itself and it is also strictly implementing the decisions that are passed by the consortium.  To name, but a few, the school has participated on the revision of the Ethiopian LL.B curriculum that was undertaken in 2019 (to make it in tune with the new national educational roadmap) at Bishoftu Town under the auspice of the consortium and Justice and Legal Research and Training Institute of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and it is participating in the administration of National Law Exit Exam.
The school is also one of the founding members of the Ethiopian Network of Free Legal Aid Service Providers established in Addis Ababa on March 17/2020 with the aim of strengthening the collaboration of all free legal aid providers of the country to work on the common purpose of ensuring the attainment of justice for the indigent members of the community.
The school is also one of the few Ethiopian law schools that took part on the first initiative conference for the establishment of Ethiopian Network of Academics on forced displacement, held in Addis Ababa City on November 28/2019.
The school has also been working with international humanitarian agencies like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) issues. The school have been providing free legal service for Female, indigent part of society, children and IDPs and Returnees in west Guji Zone.
The school has also developed the culture of closely working with staffs from different law schools such as Hawassa University law school, Addis Ababa University Law School and Arsi University Law School on its postgraduate programs. This indicates that the school has the ability, and experience to fill its own human resource limitations through partnership.
All the above facts indicate that in spite of the shortage of its age, our school is really a vibrant school that is run by very energetic, hard-working, and visionary staff members who work day and night for change and excellence in this very competitive academic world. Indeed, our school is able to prove that there is no necessary connection between age and maturity, as far as   institutional progress is concerned. The school has been doing and it also envisages to continue doing even what the gigantic law schools of our country might afraid of doing and for that matter we are committed to pay everything that it might require us to ascertain the progress of our school. On top of the determination and promising experience of our school, the unwavering determination of our university’s top and middle level management in general in working for change and excellence is another immense input that gives tremendous force to our school’s effort.
