February 05/2017
The teaching hospital is working on various strategies to ensure that the hospital meets the standards to provide quality services to patients. Therefore, using e-APTS (electronic Auditable Pharmaceutical Transaction) software is a better option and appropriate for implementing a paperless system that allows for comprehensive control of medicines and related resources, which are one of the important resources in the health sector, starting from the procurement system. Therefore, after a week-long training session in collaboration with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau, the software has been implemented.

Guye Betero, coordinator of the pharmacy department of the teaching hospital, said that the benefits of being able to provide services at the hospital level and implementing the service through the software are multifaceted. He said that among the benefits, it allows the hospital to submit purchase requests for medicines needed by the hospital, to track the distribution of medicines in one place, to identify medicines used by patients and those whose service period has expired, and it also greatly improves the quality of reporting information provided to the relevant body regarding the distribution of medicines and related resources. Speaking about the software being used, Dr. Hassan, the Chief Executive Director of the Teaching Hospital, said that since the previous consultation for the procurement of medicines and similar matters was no longer necessary, it will now be done through the system, which will reduce the cost of this matter. He also explained that in terms of monitoring, relevant officials up to the President can use the system to monitor the status of the work.
In addition, Ato Tadele, Head of the Office of the Chief Executive Director of the Teaching Hospital, explained that the software can also be used to count medicines based on the inventory that is kept up to date, thus addressing the problems of good governance in the sector and ensuring transparency and accountability.
The Chief Executive Director of the Bule Hora University Health Institute, Dr. Safai Elema, said that discussions are being held with the relevant parties at all levels, starting from the board, to ensure that the services provided to patients at the hospital are complete and up to standard and that there are concrete actions that have been taken.
In addition, Dr. Safai noted that one of the main complaints from patients regarding the hospital's service delivery system is related to the provision of medicines, and he explained that the implementation of the software at the hospital will address this problem and take the hospital's service delivery a step forward by providing efficient services with limited manpower. He explained that the digitalization work will continue to be strengthened in the hospital's card department and other important activities in the health sector.
